19720615-Drakensbergs

There was a weekend, where Fred, Jean, Almuth and I decided to go camping in the Drakensberg mountains. Uncertain of the exact date - but it would have been around June 1972.

Cannot remember where we camped but can remember it was very rustic and very cold (winter and up in the mountains). We were so cold the first night that we were determined to get something cheap that would keep us warmer the following night. During the afternoon we saw a cafe (general store) and suggested to Jean that she go in and buy about 10 or 15 newspapers, so that we could spread them on the ground and in our sleeping bags etc... to try and up the warmth percentage. She was in there about 5 minutes and came out empty handed. We asked "what happened to the newspapers??" - and she replied... "They only had Afrikaans papers!", we laughed saying "we don't want to read the bloody things!!"

Can you see the little village/kraal - maybe 8 or 10 rondavels, just 50 yards from the roadside

A low-level bridge - lots of these in Africa - when the river rises - the bridge is beneath the water! Ideally that doesn't happen too often! Also - see the guy on horse/mule-back - just crossing the bridge??

The thing I liked about this piccie (and the reason I took it) is, there's a mule/donkey (all on his own) down there.... see the fence running from the camera into the distance (just to the right of the whitish post, in the middle-left-foreground) - about mid-pic, half an inch to the right of the fence (just before the white smudge) - is a little couple of black dots - honestly its a mule/donkey!! Poor thing! Do you reckon he gets lonely??
