Around about October to December of 1970 I had
been ejected from my lovely serviced apartment in the Augustus at Illovo,
because that was the deal... 1900 Programming would pay for only a certain time
(about 6 months) - cheapskates!!
Having been "far too busy" to find an
alternative - Fred and Sue offered a camp bed in the lounge for a "few nights" -
which I am very sorry to say - I overstayed my welcome - and lived there for
nearly 3 months!! Piccies from that time....
Just
your general - run of the mill - "around Jhb photie - I think this was a weekend
morning going into town from Illovo - down Oxford Rd (see the trolley bus wires
overhead?) - Uni & Planetarium straight ahead - and Jan Smuts Ave coming in from
the right just up ahead.
Fred's flat - with nothing to do... so we took photies - bit incriminating this
piccie - see the "Stop" sign in the corner - "honestly Mr Policeman - it was
lying in the road, we just picked it up and brought it home - clearing up litter
and mess"
More
plagiarism..... Fred "eyeing-up" a shot - he'd at last joined the great unwashed
- and bought himself a fairly decent Nikon (not as good as the punchy Pentax!!).
Fred
and Sue.
This must have all been during November and
early December - because Christmas saw us in Zavora, Mozambique with Laura,
Clive Lewis, Majak Lewis (and daughter ?Megan?).
Zavora camping Christmas Day 1970 - Fred's punchy Peugeot and by now I'd got the
magnificent Chrysler Valiant Rebel. (l to r - Fred, Sue and Laura). What a great
time we had - it was very hot (more of that in a minute..) and there was no
protective reef (like at Xai-Xai) - but Fred, Clive and I commandeered a car
inner-tube and just went out into the surf - all hanging onto the tube with one
arm - all legs/feet off the bottom - and just floating there waiting to get hit
by the next wave - great fun!! Downsides were.... the ever present danger of
sharks (which we never saw - hooray!!) - and BlueBottles - which we did see -
and felt!! They come floating in on the tide (Jellyfish - may even be Portuguese
Man of War types) - a brilliant Turquoise "sail" - a bit like a bubble blown
from chewing gum - and then the stingers trailing down/out behind - maybe only
12 to 18 inches long. There was no avoiding them - there were hundreds of them -
and if you went in the sea - you were virtually guaranteed of being stung - poor
old Fred - got one down his trunks!!
As I
said - it was very hot.... 112 degrees (F) in the shade of a small bar/shop
place - except in the camp-site and on the beach - there was no shade. This is
Fred on Boxing Day morning - looking as though he had been in a boxing
match..... and lost!! Too much sun the days before had swollen his eyes and face
up, so much that ?Megan? is none too impressed!! How the mighty are fallen!!
I can remember returning to Jhb before Fred and
Sue - determined to find myself a place to live - so I could leave them in peace
- what a find I made....!! Right next door to The Augustus in Illovo was an old
house standing in about 1 acre of garden with rondhavels all around it - a drive
that swung all around the property, and a swimming pool down near the road. I
was moved in by January 1st and lounging in the garden realised.....
Weaver Birds...
More outings, around Joburg- first to The Snake
Park at Halfway House....
Milking a Rinkhauls (spitting Cobra type)
Puff
Adder...

And now..... if I didn't tell you - could you
tell we're at Joburg Zoo...??

Boomslang...
Chameleon
There... if I hadn't told you - you'd have thought - Kruger Park.

Well,
maybe not - with that wall - wonky horn - caused by the wall......??

And I liked the Flamingoes.....
