After the holiday to Rimini, I next used the camera for Christmas decorations in Oxford Street and Regent Street (December 1964) - haven't posted them here - mainly because they tend to be pinpricks of light dancing in a sea of darkness.

By this time (workwise) I had moved from operating ICT 1300 (ICL 1300) Series computers to ICT 1500 (ICL 1500) series and tried to capture the "theatrical-ness" of the whole machine in this (not very good) combined shot...

its actually 2 shots in one.. the 5 blots of light at the top are of the buttons and indicators on the 10Kc tape decks. Beneath them is the second shot - of the operating Console. You can just make out, at the left, bottom corner of the bank of red lights - a hand - creeping in - this was one of my co-workers trying to add excitement by holding down some button that tested all the bulbs.

Well!! traveling from Hayes to Putney each day (and being on day-shift then evening-shift then night-shift - for two weeks each) meant that it was time to buy my first car.. Couldn't afford a new one - so second-hand had to do - and I was infatuated by the VW Beetle. Uncle Norman had owned one - and I'd been so impressed by the "wind the window down an inch or two - before trying to close the door" - because that allowed air to escape and the door to close more easily than otherwise - because of the great build-quality that made each car virtually "air-escape proof".

Around October 1964 - 977 TKL - red - for 465 Pounds from Colnbrook Motors.. Tucker and I went searching for it, and were mightily impressed when the salesman took us out for a test drive and was still accelerating in 3rd gear at close to 70 mph - going onto the M4. That's where it started to go wrong... after a mile or so the engine started coughing and spluttering and we pulled onto the hard shoulder. The bloke jumped out and immediately got a lift - leaving Tucker and I there to wonder what was going on..... A couple of minutes later, another Beetle pulled up behind us and a breathless guy came to the driver's window asking "anything wrong - can I help?" - we replied that we thought it was just "out of petrol" and he quickly replied "that's the only thing that would stop a Beetle" - raced back to his car and zoomed off. We got re-filled and returned to the garage/salesroom and it was there that I noticed the same Beetle that had pulled up behind us, and its driver - the former being serviced by the latter (in work overalls now).... we reckon it was all a big sales-con.... but it worked... I bought the car - and then took my mum out to visit Burnham Beeches...

And after that Paul Tucker, Dorothy Jaques, Wendy Tucker and I went mad - driving all over south-east England - often trying to get lost - just to see where we may end up.... some snippets.....

Apparently around Hemel Hempstead....

And then it was time for Pam Tucker (Paul's elder sister) to get married to "good old Tone" - Tony...

The main participants I think you can discern Dorothy in blue on left, Wendy in blue on right, little girl... don't know, Paul next to Tony, Paul's dad Ern next to Pam - rest unknown except I think I spy my old mum third from right!!

Then it was off to the British Grand Prix - 1965 at Silverstone - I was too far from the action to get any decent photies - but this is Jim Clarke (my hero) zooming past...

Coming home from the Grand Prix we (Maggie Leng (Margaret Leng), Barry McGinn and soon to be Di McGinn, and I) took a detour to....

.. Woburn Abbey

I'd met Yvette Asscher (Yeti - and am still in occasional contact now (2004)), by now and got just these two piccies of her - somewhere up North London (Finchley??) way..

...very arty!!

I was working for ICT/ICL (I think out of Putney - but maybe I'd transferred to Harrow by this time) - anyway I was posted to the Oxford University Press (OUP) ICT/L 1500 installation at Cricklewood - where these shots were taken..

6 * 10 KC Tape decks * 2, Monitor Printer (why??) and Anelex Printer, Paper Tape input.. Sorry - cannot remember the lady's name....

Tuesday 8th May, 2007..... there I was - tapping away on my PC at home when... "From 2 old friends in Australia" pops up as a "just arrived email".

Double-click... and what do you think...??

G'day Mate! Barry McGinn's the name! Just found your web site. Have been talking for years about trying to find you. Di and I live in Port Douglas north of Cairns. Our phone number is 61740994762 or mobile 0417627680. Call, text or email us - would really love to catch up again. We are actually in London at the moment - a friend with whom we are staying located you for us. We leave for home this evening - via Singapore. Hope we hear from you. Cheers Barry & Di McGinn

A hasty reply.......

Brilliant you found me!!

Have a good trip back to Oz - stop off in Singapore..... I've been here 5 years!!

Will respond better tomorrow - just checking my emails for now ..

Love to Di!!

More soon,

From them....

Unbelievable!!  We are actually only transiting Singapore - but will be there for about 4 hours.  Flying BA15 - landing at 17.35 on 9th May and leaving again at 21.20.  Any chance you have time to come to the airport for a drink (or 5!!).  We will recognize you from you photo's on the web.  I now have white hair, a grey beard and glasses.  No need to wear a red rose in my lapel is there??  Let us know if you can manage some time.  If not, will certainly keep in touch and we do turn up in Singapore fairly regularly.  How about you - do you come to Oz much?  Enough questions.  Get back to us if you can.
Cheers
Barry

From me...

I'll be there - have done this before with friends from the UK on their way to Oz.....

They may not like to let you out, but try it anyway... I'll be land-side of the baggage-claim for that flight!!

Oz - yes - 3 times in the last few years - spent Christmas with my 2 daughters in Sheraton - Port Douglas - then went north for a a few days - returned to PD and spent another 4/5 days there - about 4 years ago - where were you??

See you at Changi Airport - fingers crossed!!

From them....

Fantastic. Will move heaven and earth to get through to you. See you then. Cheers Barry & Di

And so it came to pass....... after 43 years...... there I was waiting in Arrivals when Barry & Di just appeared... and walked straight out - fantastic!! No problems with Immigration etc.. (I'd asked at the Information desk how we could perhaps get together - and they'd recommended a Tannoy call when I spied them in Baggage Claim) - but we needed none of that!!

Lots of chit-Chat (Janet joined us a bit later on) - and here we all are...

Fantastic!! Well done Barry & Di - now down to lots of emailing and coming up to date!!

*** End of Update ***

Whilst working at OUP I met Barry McGinn, Australian - on a world tour, just ekeing some money whilst in the UK - we got on well (first thing I remember is queuing up in the canteen for lunch with him and him asking for a "Paaahhhstie". Now I thought Ozzies would have said it the way we did (but shouldn't have) - i.e. pasty - with the "a" as in mat - but no!! Where he came from (Melbourne) that was the pronunciation - well.... I lived - and learned...

I had a car - he needed to get about - I met up with lots of his "mates" in Earls Court - especially Dianne (whom he later married) - and for about 6 months I had a great time.... firstly - showing off the London sights...

Piccadilly Circus                          Big Ben                                Houses of Parliament           BB again                   St Pauls

I have to point out the cars in "BB Again" - 2 Beetles!! A Ford Capri and a Triumph Herald, whilst in "St Pauls" that's a Simca.

I also did some shooting in the City - where Tucker and I had been SOOooooooo impressed with the "extension to London Wall" - Route 11 - we thought it was so like New York (which we'd never visited) - and that it pointed where the UK was going.... "forwards"... some hope.. anyway - I give you "Route 11"...

3rd from left is Moor House, second left is St Alphage House - the rest I don't know!! When Moor House was finished Tucker and I tried to get in to the top floor so we could enjoy the "skyscaper views" - it was after all - 18 storeys tall!! The cars are (black) a Morris Minor, Red (both of them) Austin/Morris whatever 1100's.

Di and Barry came to visit my old mum at North Hyde Road, Hayes, Middlesex..

And we had a wander around Cranford Park...

And then..... they HAD to get back to Oz... booked on the Carmania mum and I ran them down to Southampton - and made sure they got aboard....

*** Update!! *** - *** Update *** ----------------- May 2007 ------------------- *** Update!! *** - *** Update ***

They didn't sail back to Oz....... they sailed to Canada - I'd completely forgotten this.... but apparently - it was a short stay - only 3 months - then back home to Oz by the end of 1965 and married in March 1966 - I can definitely remember phoning them and wishing them well on the day of the marriage... IDD in 1966 - trendy/swinging England!!

*** End of Update ***

And since then.... I've found this wedding piccie amongst my mum's collection...

What a posh do!

Aboard the Carmania... what's that ship on the left...??

The Queen Elizabeth...

Just time for a photie on the Games Deck then...

Bye-bye.......

And then they were gone.... forever.....

A few telephone calls and letters but we lost contact (hey!! if anyone reading this knows of Barry, Di or offspring.. do email me djmikecurley@gmail.com) - I've been searching for them for years even checking in the Phone Directories and phoning McGinns when I was in Melbourne in 2000!! May 2007 - See above!! We're back in contact - Hooray!!

I leave you with a piccie of himself at that tender time..
