I bet a lot of people in Europe and America have never heard of these. Here's the story.....
I used spray-on deodorant for years, then a couple of months ago (June 2003) - there was a small patch of itchy skin (1 inch diameter) in my left armpit - which was a bit sore when the deodorant was applied - so I stopped spraying. It sort of went away but not completely - went to the doctor who said it was fungus - prescribed some cream - which did clear it up, but when I applied deodorant again - it sprang back up again - red, itchy etc..
Something had to be done!!
Decided eco-organic, all-natural etc.. had to be the way to go, especially after reading the spray-on deodorant ingredients - I quote:
 | "alcohol, butane and isobutane and propane. fragrance, isopropyl myristate, t-butyl alcohol" |
Honestly - that is the complete list of ingredients - and the only one I recognise is..... "fragrance".
So - surfing for "deodorant natural" I found sites with titles like "Deodorant Crystals", "Smelly no-more" and after snooping in a few - I became aware of a whole "subject" about which I had no knowledge - Rocks and Crystals that prevent body-odours. I was so excited - I told Janet about it when she came home, and she immediately said "Oh Tawas stones, rocks - they come from the Philippines - they're very popular". So I did some more surfing for "Tawas" - and there it all was... the Chinese have their versions and the Filipinos have theirs - but it seems to be a very Asian thing and is based on a naturally occuring mineral salt called Ammon Alum - and if you want to know more about it - check out this UK web-site www.uk-health-wholesale-products.co.uk/, or just search for "tawas crystals" for about 70+ sites.
Suffice to say - its brilliant!! I bought some unprocessed rocks for S$2.00 (less than 1 UK Pound) and some scented roll-on Tawas deodorant for S$3.0 (just over 1 UK Pound) - haven't used the roll-on yet - but after 3 weeks of use - I reckon the rocks are going to last 2 years at least - and not a hint of a smell or allergy has been detected.
Everybody in the world should know about these crystals - they are brilliant!!
Briefly - we pong because when we sweat, bacteria builds up - and its the bacteria which causes the smell. Sweating itself is not smelly, and is natural/normal - so anti-perspirants (which prevent sweating) and deodorants (which merely hide/cover-up the smell) are not "the answer". The crystals when wiped over the skin leave a residue which prevents bacteria build-up, also the residue doesn't enter our bodies (unlike some of the rubbish in western deodorants) - so its completely safe, cheap, and far more effective than anything else on the market (I think!!).
