Never lie. But you may also, on occasions, not tell the complete truth.
Do this - when it is better for the other person to believe what is less painful (or preferable) to them.
You have to remember these occasions!!
An example.... Secretary phones her boss to say she will not be in to work today. Today being Monday, and she having been away for the weekend:
"Sorry boss, the car broke down outside Exeter (200 miles away from her office), and I'll not make it in today".
Boss thinks:
 | Good that she called in |
| She's 200 miles away with a broken down car - it's a reasonable and unexpected situation. |
The reality:
| Her car broke down near her home (i.e. 195 miles outside Exeter), at four o'clock in the morning, took a while to fix, and she's tired and wants to sleep the rest of the morning. |
