Don't complain and do nothing

There I was being driven to work by the Company driver and we were chatting.

Somewhere along the line I mentioned "mortgage repayments", and he jumped in with "Oh, that's my dream - to be able to buy a house" - he lived with wife and kids in rented accommodation.

He then proceeded to complain about all the things that prevented him realising his dream - the Government (took too much Tax), his Employer (didn't pay enough)..etc...

At which point I realised he couldn't be telling the truth - after Tax, he would have had enough to pay his rent - why not a mortgage?

So instead of listening to 10 minutes of moaning and complaining I decided to attack.

It turned out:

bullet

He wouldn't allow his wife to work - her place was at home looking after the kids and cleaning/cooking etc..

bullet

They both smoked

bullet

The whole family would have a full 2 week holiday every year

bullet

He ran a quite large car

There were other things which also either prevented them earning more money - or cost them money.

So my conclusions were:

bullet

His dream of buying a house was not his top priority - it was maybe 5th, 6th or 7th - behind "other requirements' like those listed above

bullet

I hadn't wanted to listen to this guy complaining about something he wasn't prepared to do anything about. Waste of my time.
