Our first night was near Le Mans, then Paris, Bordeaux, San Sebastian, Madrid, Seville, Cadiz, Gibraltar, flew over to Tangier on an old Dakota for a day-trip (Gib/Morocco was 23-09) - Jimmy edwards was on the plane, then up the Mediterranean coast - meandering - wonderful!! until the South of France - then raced home! |
| 6-Aug-66 | 27-Aug-66 | London to - Italy with Lyn Savage (pictures) (from Melbourne Australia), in 977 TKL, camping (I knew how to show a lady a good time!) - basically we drove to Yugoslavia around Rijeka, then round to Venice, down the East Coast to about the level of Rome then across to Rome (fantastic), poor old car was parked on the street for about 3 days with all our gear inside - nothing worth pinching... Florence, Pisa, Genoa, Monte Carlo and home. Last few days were scary I remember - Lyn had a big Italian banknote that she thought was worth (say) 50 US$, but turned out to be worth only 7 - and that was all we had to live/drive on for about 4 days!! |
| 1-Sep-67 | 23-Sep-67 | London to - Greece (pictures) with Andy Roland, Malcolm Shuttleworth in 977 TKL - camping. We met Andy's friend Vibeka who was au-pairing in Frankfurt and delivered her to a family in Naousa, Northern Greece, where she was to au-pair again. Basically across Germany, down to Yugoslavian Coast, down the coast all the way to Albania - which we couldn't get into - so had to drive around - on the way Malcolm managed to get savaged by Sea-anemonies - and we had to take him to 2 hospitals for attention - and I remember that "ambulanta" is Serbo-Croat for Hospital. The drive around Albania was amazing - the roads were more like dried up river beds - there's a wonderful picture of 977 TKL in the campsite after that trip (poor old thing) - through Skopje - a few years after their earthquake - into Greece, dropped Vibeka off - noticed that Greek drivers were on full-beam until they got 20 yards from you - then switched to side-lights (not dipped beam!!) - very interesting the first couple of times... "can't see, can't see... where's he gone??" - Down East Coast to Athens, Acropolis, Olympia, Peloponnese Peninsula, Corinth Canal - somewhere here (Igoumenitsa??) we missed our ferry back to Brindisi, raced through the night to catch it again at its last Greek port of call before sailing to Italy - we slept under an Olive tree and at dawn saw the ship come sailing in - lovely! Back through Italy and home.. |

Les Bentley had offered to run us to Heathrow (thanks Les) - and was on time - although roads were a bit icy/foggy - we got to the Terminal just in time to see the Check-in desk removing the Flight details - we went to them and said "we're on your 8:00PM flight" - to which they said "we don't have an 8:00PM flight" - the travel agent had booked us and forgotten about UK Summer/Winter time gain/loss of 1 hour - if we raced - we'd just about catch their 7:00PM flight - but our baggage wouldn't make it until the next day. We raced, got on board - to be told there was a 1 hour delay before take-off. Duly arrived in Joburg the next morning - we were the last to come out of Immigration because Almuth had forgotten to get a visa to enter SA (forgot that German's had to) - they sold us a visa - went outside - and there were our bags - the only ones - on the carousel - they got there - because of the 1 hour delay. Mrs Hayward and Maureen Koeppler & daughter, met us. I think we went to Alan & Di's house for a day or so then with Mrs Hayward to Kruger, then stayed in Pietermaritzburg, visited Moira and Ken at their house overlooking "all of Africa" and had a wonderful trek through the bush with cousin Billy's sons...?? |

Next day - out on their yacht to Menton, swimming, drinking Shampop then back to the harbour entrance for the first fireworks display of the year, then mototred down to the Sporting Club where we barbecued and heard Joe Cocker on stage, then back to the harbour entrance where lots of boats were still "mingling: after the fireworks - heard a tinkling piano - turned out to be Elton John giving a concert on the back of a big yacht - watched/heard him for about an hour, then home - out on the boat the next day - then on the Monday I helicoptered back to Nice airport. Well done Bassy's!! |
| 2-Oct-92 | 10-Oct-92 | London to - Turkey, flotilla cruising, with Inga, Dalamam airport to Marmaris where we got aboard our 30 foot power boat (no experience necessary), there were another 6 or 7 boats in the flotilla - next day was instruction on how to maneuver the boat and get the anchor up/down etc.. then off.... as fast as we could - spread all over the horizon - making for the designated "next stop" - lots of drinking - very relaxed - lounging on the quayside, pre-dinner drinks - talking over the day's events. Tour captain was Peter ?French name?, engineer was Kiwi ?? - met up with them again a few months later at the Earls Court Boat Show. |

I was asleep in bed one night - Brian returned saying "you have to get up and come meet ?? - the Ozzie ski-teach he'd re-met in a bar - what a coincidence - he'd married the lady he was with before in 1991 - she was Dutch and he joined her family Rhine boat cruising for a few years, and was here again on holiday. | 15-Jun-95 | 20-Jun-95 | Hong Kong to - Manila, Philippine Plaza Hotel, this was Janet organising me - I'd said I wanted to tour/drive around the Philippines - she said "you cannot" - meaning - there are no maps, no road signs, and everybody is a crook and will rip me off. I said I'd done enough touring before to take care of myself - she asked Rene Limson to organise me. Many thanks Rene - it was all true what Janet had said (except maybe for the rip-offs) Rene first drove us East to Ta-al volcano and lakes - this is where Janet wants to settle eventually - around Tagaytay - then north to Baguio where we stayed in the Country Club - Janet had said there were log-cabins in Baguio, but they were of the flat board (not round-tree) variety. We then drove over towards Angeles/Clarke and drove through the remains of the Pinatubo eruption. That was amazing.... we were 40 Kms away from the volcano (which had erupted a few years earlier) and as we drove across a large river (I didn't realise it was a river, because there were no banks or water - just dust (like grey talcum powder) and we started to see the apex of houses buried in the "dust" - it was 20 feet at least deep!! The river had been a hundred yards or more wide - and it was completely full of this "lahar" (40 KMs away!!) - and they said more would come down each year - as typhoons came in - deposited lots of water onto the slopes of Pinatubo, where the dust/lahar was lodged - and "it would just become unstable and run down until it subsided. Amazing!! |

Drove to Dallas met up with Doris' ex-mother-in-law Beth then all 5 of us drove to San Antonio - did the Riverwalk and the Alamo - and had a good time. |
