PC-Fix - 20100527

Problem - Maxtor One-Touch external hard drive - Device not recognised. Or, Autoplay on boot-up.

Fix - Take the Maxtor disk to 5th floor Funan Centre - look for Seagate and Maxtor shop - fill in 1 form - replacement disk couriered to you within 7 days.

Additional - Looks to me as though there is a "fragility" with Maxtor One-Touch drives - I've had 2 now, going for my third:

First - purchased 6th November 2008

Second - replace first 8th December 2009

Third - replace second 27th May 2010

PC-Fix - 20102010

Problem - See PC-Fix 20100527 above - even the 3rd Maxtor disk failed

Fix - got a new Maxtor disk from Funan.. installed it - deleted all Maxtor software off the new disk - works like a charm.... get rid of all Maxtor software on disk and installed.

PC-FIX - 20110329

Problem - Screen jumps. for example - do a Google search, monitor jumps up and down the list of sites.

Fix - get a new Mouse.... or maybe try cleaning/re-suscitating it, or maybe try with another mouse first.

PC-FIX - 20110715

Problem - Filename too long - you cannot copy, rename, delete because the filename plus the Foldername amounts to more than 260/290 characters

Fix - change the Foldername and/or filename to something shorter.

PC-Fix - 20110802

Problem - people phone you and tell you your PC is spreading errors and viruses across the Internet - do you want them to help you fix this problem??

Fix - tell them to get lost... you have no interest in what they are describing/suggesting - put the phone down!!

Background - If you continue talking with them - this is what will happen:

The first person you speak to will ask you if you want to see the problem you are causing

If you say "yes" they will ask you to run EVENTVR (which is Event Viewer) and this is legit Windows software so they've done nothing wrong yet...

This will show you all the "events" that have occurred on your PC - at this point you may be impressed that they are able to tell you "you're running Windows XP" or whatever

Windows creates hundreds of "events" - some will be "Cautions" with yellow Icon, some may be actual "Errors" - red Icon

They'd like you to be worried by these "events"

You may be passed to a second person now - who will help you get rid of the errors

He/she will ask you to go to WWW.AMMYY.COM - which is (I think) a legit site offering all types of software that enables others to take control of your PC

You will be asked to Download their latest software and run it

This will get you into a Registration/Identification dialogue

At this point - tell them to get lost - otherwise you will install some software that may:

Take control of your PC and/or

Install some key-logging software that will allow them to see exactly what you type from then on...
